play on!

Dear folks,

i am forever inspired by down-to-earth families. I love watching how they interact, play, listen, learn and teach each other. It inspires me to spend more time with Julia and Dave: talking to them, playing, enjoying life...not just rushing from one task to the next. Although i am a firm believer in good hard work (however i am lazy more than i should be!haha) i need to exercise balance in how i get it done.
Lately i have been thinking of creative ways to cut down on daily work without lowering the standard of cleanliness and food that we have. (cooking ahead for a week etc) hmmm... All this thinking to say, i want to spend more time planning activities (walks, parks, library, pool, art etc) to do with Julia. Play. Play. Play. I seem to go in seasons. In the spring i was totally into interesting art and science activities with her, and now i have lost that flow and switched to another focus. I wish it wasn't so hard to 'juggle' all of the things i want to do. Perhaps if i organize household 'necessities' into specific periods of time i will have more freedom to do this......

any ideas???

other than that..... Julia has been soooo super busy with imaginative play lately!! it is wonderful to see her acting things out with her soup noodles and crackers. giving them voices, names, and actions!! She is interested mainly in her farmyard, train, house, and people toys right now. Each turns in to a character that talks to the others...it is so fun to listen to!!! i love sneaking a peek, and listening to her ramble on. play time is wonderful! :)

Hey you!! I think that's a great idea, and that's what I aspire to as well!! I've found that flylady.net has some really great suggestions for keeping the house together by tackling it in managable chunks... you might find some ideas there. She's all about doing things in 15-minute blocks, planning ahead, etc.

As well, I'm a believer in the cooking ahead of time idea!! We loved the meals that we did all in one day (ending up with about 40 suppers)...while that is a little hard core to start with, it can be pared down to do a weeks worth of dinners, or two, etc. It was so nice to be able to look at our little "menu" and decide what to have the next night (that only needed to be warmed up!!)...everything froze very well and tasted even better....and yay for not having to wash the same dishes over and over. It took us about 7 hours to do everything, and we had a blast!!

You're so creative...I'm sure that you'll come up with all sorts of ideas!! I wish we were closer so our kidlets could explore creative play together!! :)

Love you guys!!

thanks Kari, and Thanks Kari again. :) teehee.

i was thinking about 'flylady' i have yet to visit the site, but i think it would be useful.

funny how my brain works though. it's almost like i'm afraid to check the site because then i will have to start the 'hard core' schedule...which i WANT but dread atthe same time. strange.

:)thanks!

I am by no means on top of what needs to be done around here (which you would witness by looking into one of my closets that needs desperately to be organized) but one thing I've found helpful for that necessary daily cleaning is setting aside a time...for me it's between 7 and 9 in the morning, before M's first nap, where all I do is work to get the house tidy and small jobs done like sweeping, mopping, bathrooms, laundry. It helps me to have a time set aside and a deadline. Whatever doesn't get done has to wait, usually until the next day, unless I have a few minutes available later. It frees me to spend time in other blocks with the kids, or doing activities like going to the park...and it feels good to have a somewhat presentable house for the day! I find it's the best time early in the morning because that's when I seem to be able to muster up that necessary 'cleaning-mode.' It works for me! I'd love to try that advanced meal prep too.

Without reading the other comments...bask in the luxury of not having to schedule a whole lot in. Soon enough your calendar will be so full of sports, lessons, car-pooling, parties, field trips and places to go, that you will gaze back fondly and remember how you used to dream of planning more activites to fill your days. Let the clock tick slowly...soon you will won't even hear it. So...

Work and play
Every day
Learn and cook
Read a book
Have a swim
At your whim
Have winter walks
with lots of talks...
Watch the clock
Hear it tick tock...
Time goes fast
So make it last...

There, how'd ya like my silly little poem?

very good. i definately don't want to be a person with kids in five activities each, to me that is nuts.

but at the same time...part of me feels bad if i don't do something...i guess because if it isn' ta part of my regular activities...it usually doesn't get done . you know?

but i like the sounds of your poem..that is pretty much our life now. read, cook, sew, sleep, walk, run, have some fun. :)

loves.
