A summary: i guess.
Church History. My brain is so full. (warning: stop reading now if you find History dull)
Where do i start?? i want to keep some summary "notes" on this topic just to solidify it in my own memories. (writing this down, forcing myself to restate that which i have read, really helps me do that)
Here goes:
Section One: Jesus and the Apostles
6BC-70AD
- Christianity's roots go back into Jewish history long before the birth of Jesus Christ
- Jesus came, attacking established Judaism, brought a renewal.
-after his death and resurrection, his teachings spread throughout the Mediterranean
-The Apostle Paul stressed God' s gift of salvation for all men, causing Christianity to grow from Palestinian Judiasm and become a universal religion.
-Stephen openly proclaimed that the Old Testiment (O.T.) declared all that God was going to do through Jesus, that Jewish rules and regulations were only meant to be temporary. Quoting from Isaiah and other O.T. books Stephen built his case, showing the Jewish Council how they were God' s chosen people to receive the law, but that they had not obeyed it. Then they stoned him.
-Jewish leaders were baffled at the rate in which Christianity spread after they killed its ringleader. After all, how could so many people follow a 'dead' man?
-The first company of believers was Jewish. They called themselves followers of "The Way" until soon after they changed their title to "ekklesia" (greek) or Church. (the equivalent of the O.T. term for the assembly of Israel.)
-Christians still met at the temple for services, strictly observed Jewish laws and rituals.
-the only practices that showed they were different: baptism and communion
- Christianity spread very quickly to the Hellenistic Jews (Greek) who were from all over the Roman Empire, mixed more easily with the gentiles, were more exposed to Greek culture, more responsive to new ideas.
- Hellenistic and Palestinian Jewish Christians began to have friction when the widows of H.J.'s were being 'overlooked' by the P.J.'s. Thus Deacons were called into service. (meaning of deacon: servant or minister)
-A.D. 36 marks the first major blood shed of Jesus-followers and a widening gap btw Christian and Jew.
-Hebrew Apostles did not have to run, but the Hellenistic Christians fled and began to start churches in other parts of the world due to the bloodshed . (samaria, syria, damascus, antioch, tarsus, egypt)
-Paul's conversion: he realizes that "the Law of God was given for a time to convince men of their inablilty to fulfill the will of God and to leave them with no option except to embrace the good news of Jesus Christ's death and resurrection." (page 20)
-by 70 A.D. the break btw Christianity and Judaism was complete. (Christian Jews were banned from Synagogue services, etc)
-The 'old wineskin' was torn. Christianity would remain a 'gentile' movement.
Section Two: The Age of Catholic Christianity
70-312 A.D.
we'll do that another day...i want to jump ahead to my reading in section three....talk to you again soon! (maybe)

Also in 70 A.D. the temple was destroyed, and they could not possibly do sacrifices in the temple anymore. But it is said that even before that God's spirit had 'left the building'. I'll see if I can find that info, it's quite fascinating.
Way to go Sue. Next comes the sad part. Constantine and anti-semitism..
i am actually way past constantine now...i don't think i will do notes on the parts i have passed...it is too hard to not keep going where i am.
oh well. :) i will just note what hits me from now on. :)
thanks anti , i will love the extra info from you.
I am just amazed at you. This is not the sort of thing most mommy's read during their pregnancies. When I was at your stage of life, I was into decorating magazines, pregnancy manuals, soap operas and other such mundane fluff. How did this happen that you are so interested in these things?
Okay, here Sue, I found them, some fascinating writings in easy to read point form of what occurred in the forty years between the crucifixion and the destruction of the temple in 70 A.D. to show that the law was no longer necessary and that Christ had fulfilled the law and paid the debt for sin in full. Very cool, interesting stuff to supplement your studies on this...

I split the link in half so it will fit in this teeny tiny eensy comment box, so if you copy it into your browser, make sure you have the whole thing. Hope it works. This isn't exactly the one I was looking for, but it has the same info I have learned from other sources.
Thanks Anti. i went to the site, but couldn't see an obvious place where these 40 things were?? perhaps i am preggy-brained. haha. HElp. :)
um as for interest in this...well, i am ashamed of my lack of historical (biblical) knowledge. and i think it is soooo good for giving me hope for the trials i see Christiandom entering now. You know, all the acceptance of worldly things, it is good to read back and see that this has been the case since Jesus began His ministry, and that we do still have hope. It is good for my perspective as well as for instruction and wisdom on what to do about these problems.
loves.
I don't think it's 40 things, but just all things that happened during those 40 years between Christ's atonement and the destruction of the temple. Things that had always been done in a certain way, no longer happened that way because the necessity of priests and temple sacrifice was no longer an issue. Like, the red wool the priest would tie on the scape goat every year on the Day of Atonement that used to always turn white, symbolizing God's forgiveness of their sins...it would no longer do that after Jesus was the final atonement. It remained red. And the temple doors would mysteriously swing open all by themselves, showing that we could now enter into His presence through Christ or hight priest, not just the priest anymore...etc. etc. there are more things listed there. All mysteries to unbelieving Israel, but powerful signs for those who understand. They should have known, too.
Oops, the scapegoat was sent into the wilderness, symbolizing our sins forgotten by God as far as the east is from the west, the other goat with the red string was tied to the temple.
Need coffee....
cooool wow. must read when i get the chance. thanks again! :)
